The practitioner view
From Eli: conditions are not causes, and one roof is not four.
Blistering and granule loss are conditions. They are not causes. Writing them down and stopping is like a doctor charting "patient has a fever" and calling it a diagnosis. Blisters and hail bruises do not look alike and do not behave alike. A blister is a round pop from trapped moisture or attic ventilation, the mat underneath is intact, and it shows up on every slope because ventilation does not care which way the wind blew. A hail bruise is soft under the thumb, the mat is fractured, the pattern is directional, and it has a diameter that should correspond to a reported stone size on a specific date.
Collateral is what wins hail files. You can argue a shingle got old. You cannot argue a condenser coil aged into a dent field on one side. Then I pull the hail report for the address and match reported stone diameter to measured bruise diameter. When those two numbers agree, "consistent with age" stops being a sentence anybody wants to defend.
The discontinued shingle is the whole file. I put it in writing, not in argument. Manufacturer discontinuation letter, and two supplier availability statements confirming the line, profile, and color are unavailable. Florida Statute 626.9744 requires the carrier to make reasonable repairs or replacement of items in adjoining areas when replaced items do not match in quality, color, or size. The statute lets the insurer weigh cost against the uniformity achievable, and it applies unless your policy provides otherwise, so the endorsement language on your specific form matters as much as the statute does. A repair that cannot restore reasonably uniform appearance is not a repair, and the covered loss becomes the full system.
One roof, not four roofs. The peril does not have to touch every slope for the loss to be the entire system, and "not direct physical loss" is a category error. The undamaged slopes are not a separate claim being smuggled in. They are the cost of repairing the damaged one. Nobody argues you should only pay for half a windshield because the crack is on the driver's side. I frame it to the carrier in one sentence: you have agreed the loss is covered, so the only remaining question is what it costs to make this house whole, and there is no version of whole that involves two colors of shingle on one house.

The lee slope is my control. Hail doesn't hit all four sides. Age does.
